Wait, My Pelvic Organs Can Do What?

“I’m freaking out right now!” was the response of one of the women that attended a new mommy return to fitness workshop I gave a few weeks back. The topic had turned to pelvic organ prolapse and most of the attendees had not heard of it, or about it. Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is the descent of the pelvic organs from their original positions into and sometimes out of the vagina. Multiple factors contribute to POP but some of the  common culprits are tissue and/or muscle damage or weakness related to pregnancy, delivery, lack of recovery post partum and poor fitness strategies. The moms were all ears to understand the issue, the contributing factors, and in particular the role of running during pregnancy and post partum in the development of prolapse.

My recommendations are related to reconnecting to a system the integrates the pelvic floor into core, rehabilitation, and fitness programs. This trains a neuromuscular strategy that creates stability from the inside-out (see The Core Redefined: A Functional Model video on my You Tube Channel as an introduction to this strategy).
